Cool Running
Professional runners know that running on the pavement is deadly for your knees and shins. Pavement running is completely different from running on a treadmill.
A treadmill is stagnant, it’s easier on the knees and you don’t really do much work on it. But when you run on the pavement you have the elements, and distractions. You’re physically propelling your body forward and asking your heart and lungs to support you while you run for miles and miles, not to mention the pavement to foot contact. Because I am a runner and very results driven I prefer to run outside-but when my knees start to hurt I go indoors on the treadmill.
A long time ago when I was younger I wasn’t able to eat or drink anything before my morning runs. Now that I’m older I have to eat something. I eat protein within the first 30 minutes of waking up. I’ll have anywhere from a handful to two handfuls of cashews, almonds or peanuts and a banana.
Ladies, I suggest that if you’re a morning runner (like I am) that you eat something. Eat an apple, a banana, nuts, and yogurt. Whatever you choose you need to help your body supply the energy you’ll need to get through your run.
After eating, I begin stretching. I stretch my back, my shoulders and then focus all my energy on stretching my legs and shins since my legs take a beating on the pavement. Then I grab my sunglasses and hit the road.

Let’s discuss running gear. Ladies, ladies, you only need 2 very important items to run. Whether you choose to run, walk, tennis, kick box anything please make sure you have these two items on.
1. A good sports bra
2. The appropriate shoes i.e. Running, walking, tennis etc.
I’m very particular about my footwear. I only wear Nike Air Max 90’s. I wear them because I am obsessed with a funky running sneaker with vivid colors.
Here are a few pairs of my in rotation Air Max 90's
Lastly, I want to discuss running or walking posture. Be mindful of the activity in the area of your chest cavity. Your heart is working harder to pump blood and your lungs are working harder to supply oxygen to the body. When you run try to keep your head up and high and your back straight. It’s natural for you to get tired and hunch over, when this happens take a deep breath which will naturally straighten you up. Try not to hunch this will cause constrictions and make your heart and lungs work harder.
Next, your hands should swing naturally by your sides, your hands should be slightly closed, act as if you are carrying a delicate potato chip in each hand. Don’t swing your arms unnecessarily, or run with your shoulder high or your thumbs up. Remember this burns energy and you need all the energy to get you through your run.
Ok, ladies it sounds like you are ready to start running or make improvements on your running. Just remember it’s all in the name of good health!
Cool Runnings,
XOXO!
